Discover Ottawa

The Capital City

Montreal and Quebec no longer have any secrets for you? Want to explore another part of Canada? So to discover Ottawa, here is a selection of things to do and see to make your stay a success.

Skating on the Rideau Canal

In winter, part of the Rideau Canal is transformed into a huge ice rink. Covering nearly 8 kilometres, it is one of the largest in the world. The atmosphere is quiet and suitable for children. We also take the opportunity to buy beaver tails, iconic Canadian pancakes fries (not to be confused with pancakes) sold in kiosks installed along with the rink.

Admire Notre-Dame Cathedral

How to discover Ottawa and enjoy downtown? You have to go to Notre Dame Cathedral. An architectural wonder, this neo-gothic church is one of the oldest and most significant places of worship in Ottawa. Admired by its pointed arches, tiered grandstands and stained-glass windows, its slender stone columns on either side of the aisles and the domed ceiling.

Take a tour at the local market

For a better overview of Ottawa’s cuisine, visit ByWard Market, one of the oldest and most important culinary markets in the city. In total, more than 260 kiosks where local farmers and artisans offer their flagship products.

Go to the Museum of Fine Arts

Opposite Parliament (which should also be visited), the National Gallery is a must for all art lovers. From outside, we admire the magnificent glass structure and gargantuan spider sculpture. Inside, we immerse ourselves in the works of Picasso, Da Vinci Michelangelo and other great contemporary Canadian artists, such as Joseph Légaré and Antoine Plamondon. The Museum of Fine Arts also hosts temporary exhibitions different from year to year.

To go to the beach

You are not dreaming, Ottawa does have beaches. One of the most beautiful is on Petrie Island. Open from May to September; it offers a stretch of fine sand and a splendid view on the other side of the Ottawa River. Petrie Island Beach hosts several events and activities throughout the summer, including HOPE volleyball tournaments.
